CHAPTER 5L : SEACOLE HOSPITAL
TAILS. ASH COMES CLEAN.
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 1 ticket to the Resettlement Zone.
Charlotte has convinced her colleague DARREN to buy her a ticket by promising to go with him to the Zone. A promise she does not intend to keep.
Ash, not trusting the Zone and threatened by Darren’s presence, has taken assertive action and sold their first two tickets.
Charlie thinks they have 3 tickets. Ash knows they have 1.
He has flipped over whether to own up to what he’s done, or try to convince Charlie not to go to the Resettlement Zone and go with him to CORNWALL instead.
Tails. Ash comes clean.
Charlie is beside herself with anger. Ash weakly tries to bring up his reasons - she kissed Darren! - but is shouted down. Who cares about that when their daughter’s life is in danger?!
The only person they know has a ticket is Darren. Ash has to get it, whatever it takes. Then at least Emma can come with Charlie. They’ll figure out what happens to Ash later.
Meanwhile, at SEACOLE HOSPITAL, the DOCTOR we saw in Chapter 1 fights a dozen fires.
11pm The Dhumals drive over to Darren’s flat and Ash fights through an end-of-the-world party in the lobby. Charlie has told him to try persuasion, but to take her HUNTING KNIFE, just in case.
Ash passes MICHAEL KING in the hallway.
Darren welcomes Ash in. They debate, and things quickly turn into a ridiculous, stylised fight using Darren’s samurai swords. Ash goes to decapitate Darren and we CUT TO -
Charlie in the car, receiving a phonecall. She’s been imagining the fight above. Darren’s calling. He tells her to come and get Ash.
Meanwhile, the DOCTOR’S HUSBAND calls and begs him to come home. He tells him he has to stay a little longer.
Charlie heads up with Emma and finds that Darren has beaten Ash to a pulp. Darren’s broken the hand that Ash tried to use to stab him with the hunting knife.
Charlie tells Ash she’ll take him to the HOSPITAL. Darren tells Charlie he never wants to see any of them again.
But Charlie isn’t giving up. She fights Darren. She gets pretty dinged up, but she knocks him out and steals his ticket.
Charlie drives Ash to the hospital. They have THE CONFRONTATION on the way. Charlie thinks: if Ash hadn’t been such a coward they wouldn’t be in this mess. Ash thinks: Charlie is ruthless - she was always more able to get the ticket than him but she was hell bent on punishing him. Did she hope that he died so she could go without him?
12am At Seacole Hospital, SOLDIERS are guarding the doors. A list of symptoms - anyone experiencing them must go immediately home.
In the reception, an army medic greets them, checks their eyes, and asks for their INSURANCE CARD. Luckily, Charlie has the family’s one with her.
1am Ash and Charlie are seen by the DOCTOR.
Fixing Ash up, the Doctor hears about their night, and tells them about his. Him and his husband have TICKETS - he’s looking forward to getting home to him as soon as he can (if he can).
The Doctor nips out to grab painkillers. Charlie proposes a horrible plan: they rob the Doctor for his ticket. He’s not going to be allowed to leave - look at the place - it's overrun. Ash sort of wants this, but also feels like he needs to be moral: no, Charlie should just leave Ash behind.
Meanwhile, a furious Darren is driving to the hospital, searching for the Dhumals.
Charlie takes out the COIN. She calls tails and flips.
