CHAPTER 6L : THE EDEN PROJECT

TAILS. CHARLIE CONTINUES TO FLEE

CHARLOTTE, ASH have 3 TICKETS to the RESETTLEMENT ZONE, but thanks to Ash’s lies, they’re down in CORNWALL and ASH’S PARENTS are about to be attacked by a NATIONALIST MILITIA. Charlie knows the latter; Ash doesn’t.

Charlie wants to try to get to the Resettlement Zone with Emma and Ash, but she also wants to save ANAND and VIDYA.

Ash is following Charlie out of guilt and duty, but he never willingly chooses the option that abandons his parents - he’ll always look for another way.

Our heroes started out reaffirming the value of family and togetherness, but they’ve repeatedly betrayed extended family members who’ve tried to help them. Ash and Charlie also haven’t communicated, have failed to understand each others’ positions, and have flipped the COIN to make obscene decisions. Thanks to these decisions, they’ve found themselves in a situation that feels like a folk horror. But, depending on the result of the current coin flip, can some of them still make it through the film alive …?

Charlie’s flipped over whether to just ignore the militia’s plan and keep driving to the Zone, or to go back and try to save her in-laws.

THE COIN is TAILS. Charlie’s going to ignore the fact that the militia are about to murder Anand and Vidya, and continue to flee Cornwall with Emma and Ash.

ACT FIVE.

4:35am Charlie orders Ash back into the CAR - they’re leaving.

Ash, still reeling from what’s just happened, is incredibly confused. He looks at the body of the MILITIA MEMBER - the mask is off. He recognises the man as one of the people who pulled them over earlier.

And he connects the dots, aloud: … what if they’re going after HIS PARENTS too?!

He picks up the RIFLE (as if he knows how to use it …). He tells Charlie: let’s go back to the COTTAGE.

Charlie refuses. She’s not taking Emma back there. They have to get out of Cornwall, they have to get to the Zone. It’s obscene but it’s the only way to ensure Emma survives this.

Ash is horrified: she’d leave his parents?

Furious, Charlie points out that he left HER SISTER. And while Charlie loves Anand and Vidya, they’re almost certainly dead by now, and it’s extremely unlikely the Dhumals would beat an armed militia.

Ash climbs into the car, and locks the doors.

Charlie realises what he’s doing and rushes forwards, but Ash starts the car. Charlie tries to open a door but Ash reverses at speed, back towards the house. Emma is screaming in terror.

Ash’s impulse is to run to his parents, stay with them, be with them, help them … He’ll always feel guilty about leaving them, and hesitate over it.

Charlie looks to the MILITIA CAR - where are the keys?

But appearing on the VERGE above the road, and in the FIELD below the road, are MASKED MILITIA MEMBERS.

The assailants are too close, so Charlie starts to run. The militia sweep from the fields onto the road, striding after her, confident she won’t escape them.

Ash has turned the car around, and is speeding towards the cottage. 4:45am He swerves into the DRIVEWAY, knocking down a HENCH MILITIA MEMBER, and screeches up to the house. He climbs out, locks the doors - Emma inside - and rushes up to the COTTAGE’S FRONT DOOR.

He opens it just in time to see VIDYA and ANAND being stabbed to death in the LOUNGE by a MILITIA MEMBER.

Ash raises the rifle and shoots, missing the Militia Member. The Member comes for Ash with a knife, but Anand and Vidya grab his legs and pull him down. Ash rushes forwards and hits the man with the butt of the rifle until he stops moving.

Ash cradles his parents as they bleed out. They feebly push at him - flee, now. More MILITIA MEMBERS are appearing at windows and doors.

Numb, Ash stumbles outside, just as Charlie sprints into the driveway.

They meet at the car - locked, with Emma freaking out inside.

Unfortunately, in the rules of the Two Roads universe, Ash and Charlie must be punished for their cowardly flips deciding Amy, Anand and Vidya’s fates.

Charlie sees the blood on Ash and urges him to open the car doors. Ash struggles to get his hand into his VERY TIGHT TROUSER pockets. He finally gets them out and clicks the doors open -

BANG! A bullet rips through Ash’s torso, passes through Charlotte’s torso, and thuds into the driveway’s pebbles. In the cottage’s KITCHEN window, the MILITIA LEADER lowers his rifle.

Charlie and Ash pile into the car, panicking. Charlie’s in the driver’s seat, Ash in the back with Emma.

As the Leader reloads his rifle, more MILITIA MEMBERS emerge from the cottage, coming for the car.

Charlie reverses the car at top speed; the Leader shoots, but hits the bonnet.

Charlie swerves out onto the road, knocking two more MILITIA MEMBERS down, and then puts her foot down. The MEMBERS that were following her dive out of the way.

Charlie speeds down country roads. What do they do?! They’re both bleeding out.

Behind them, a TRUCK emerges from the darkness, following. Inside, the Leader is driving, with another MILITIA MEMBER in the passenger seat.

Charlie sees and puts her foot down. The truck gives chase …

… catching up. It reaches the Dhumals’ car and shunts them -

They spin along the road, sideways into a tree. Emma’s screaming; Ash is freaking out; Charlie draws her HUNTING KNIFE.

Behind them, the truck waits in the centre of the road.

Then it pulls forwards slowly, and pauses alongside them.

The passenger is unconscious. Her cranium is an odd shape. The Leader’s eyes are bleeding. He winds the window down and, chuckling, asks where they are - he honestly can’t remember. The mystery illness has gotten them …

The Leader watches, confused, as Charlie pulls away.

Charlie drives. Her and Ash are bleeding out. They need to find treatment or treat themselves, but also to get inside - they’re worried about the effects of the BOMBS THAT HIT LONDON AND BIRMINGHAM. What should they do?

Ash sees a sign and points - that way.

Charlie takes a turning and drives …

… eventually pulling into THE EDEN PROJECT.

5:45am Charlie stops the car and, weak, turns to Ash. But he’s dead.

Charlie climbs out of the car and shouts for help. No answer.

She grabs her MEDICAL KIT and Emma, and heads for one of the DOMES.

She lets herself inside. There’s no one around.

She tries to treat herself, but she’s bleeding too much.

She hugs Emma. Tells her to wait in here for people to come - don’t go outside.

Watching Emma play with the leaves of an exotic plant, Charlie dies.

7am. Emma tries to wake Charlie. No luck.

Then she wanders the dome, looking around. Her new home is beautiful, in the daylight.

THE END

What if the coin had told Charlie to save Anand and Vidya? What if Ash had taken Amy to get medical attention? Do Anand and Vidya ever survive?  Start Two Roads again to find out.
