CHAPTER 5O : OSCAR ATTACKS
HEADS. THEY WILL NEGOTIATE.
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 2 tickets to the Resettlement Zone.
After a community meeting, the street has split in two. ALI SAMAAN (10) has been kidnapped from the Dhumals’ house by the opposing group, led by PENNY. PENNY’S CREW wants all of the DHUMALS’ CREW’s TICKETS as ransom.
Penny’s son OSCAR (18) has just arrived at her house, and the Dhumals’ crew have flipped over whether to negotiate with Penny (Ash’s preference), or kidnap Oscar (Charlie’s choice).
Heads. They will negotiate. They announce their plan to the group.
And Ash doesn't like where this COIN has taken them. He throws it away. They won’t be using it again tonight. They’re a team. They don’t need it.
OSCAR heads into his parents’ house. He’s immediately annoyed that they have guests, and extremely frustrated that the Internet is down.
Penny explains that they’re trying to get him a ticket to the Zone. But he doesn’t give a fuck - he thinks the zones are traps, anyway. We see a different side to Penny: loving, desperate. Oscar’s clearly a demanding, cold, nightmare-son.
Yet when Oscar hears about the kidnap - oh boy he’s in. And he has ideas.
Charlie gets in touch with Penny about negotiating. Penny doesn’t pick up, because:
Encouraged by a rogue Oscar, Penny and her crew step things up to carry out a further assault on the Dhumal residence to scare them into giving up tickets.
But Charlie is ready. She fights the neighbours off using her baseball bat.
Oscar shoots Danny with a crossbow. Penny forces Oscar from the scene. The deal was that they’d scare them, not kill them. They need to regroup. And as they flee, Penny almost gets away with Emma too - until Vi stops her.
11.30pm Amid the fray, a LOOTER comes through the ALLEY behind the house. He’s planning to raid residences, starting with the Dhumals’. But when he sees what is already happening inside, he thinks better of it and flees.
Danny survives, but he’s laid out.
It’s clear Emma can’t stay here. And that they are going to have to fight to get Ali back. They can’t give in to these people. Either Charlie or Ash has to take Emma from the house. The other has to face very real danger. But the group cannot survive without them.
Ash says: Charlie has the ticket, she should go. Charlie points out that she’s probably better equipped to fight - she should stay. They have a rushed version of THE CONFRONTATION, but this time each interested in saving the other. Being honest and fair - not manipulative. And yet, still, they struggle to communicate effectively, or to make a decision.
Charlie picks up the COIN from the ground. Ash flips. Charlie calls tails.
