CHAPTER 4H : ALI'S KIDNAP
TAILS. ASH WINS. CHARLOTTE TURNS PENNY DOWN.
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 2 tickets to the Resettlement Zone.
They are at a community meeting led by VI, a local activist, who does not think the Resettlement Zones are a good idea.
Neighbour PENNY has tried to recruit Charlotte to convince the SAMAANS, a refugee family from Syria, to give up the tickets they have. Penny will pay, and share the spoils with Charlie.
Charlie has got to know this Samaans, and has tossed the coin over whether to go along with the plan.
Tails. Charlie won’t do it.
Charlie leaves the toilet and tells Ash they have to leave. But Penny hasn’t taken her eye off the ball. What is Charlie doing? They had a deal!
10pm There is a LEAK from the government predicting mass casualties from the crisis. Ash has Charlie’s phone and sees the alert. But Charlie is busy. He shows some NEIGHBOURS instead. Panic bubbles.
Charlie tells the nervous crowd what Penny was planning, and gains the support of Vi and the Samaans. Penny’s wife Diana steps up to Charlie, furious. Other angry neighbours - those ‘willing to do what it takes to survive’ - side with Penny and Diana (PENNY’S CREW). Vi’s husband DANNY and Ash square up against Penny’s Crew, and Ash lands a swift punch on a PARTICULARLY OBNOXIOUS DUDE.
Penny calms things and addresses Charlie. She reminds Charlie about when they first met. A quick flash to Charlie mouthing off about Ash’s ‘art’ at a street party. Charlie has no faith in him, why is he standing up for her? Ash is upset to hear this.
The street splits in two. Penny’s largely ticketless gang forms at her house, and the Dhumals’ supporters come to theirs.
Ash and Charlie take a moment upstairs while Vi happily plays host in their house. Ash doesn’t like what the government is trying to push people to do to each other - can’t they just grab HIS PARENTS and go to CORNWALL?
Charlie thinks they should at least keep trying for a ticket. Ash is pleased she resisted Penny’s plan. And she’s impressed with his standing up to the particularly obnoxious dude. They laugh, get close, sleep together.
This is Charlie and Ash at the closest we see them.
10:30pm Both groups discover the Internet is down, aside from the Government Gateway site. At Penny’s, things become more heated. She riles up the crowd.
Charlie and Ash come back downstairs in a slight daze. Ash goes to check on the kids playing hide and seek in the lounge. Emma is hiding. He sees something in the garden - an amateur drone. When he goes out to take a look, suddenly, Diana is behind him.
In the kitchen, Charlie hears something odd. She goes into the lounge to find Ash unconscious and alone, a note on his chest. If the Samaans want ALI SAMAAN (10) back, they must hand over their tickets.
As she panics, Emma emerges from her hiding place to huge relief. Ash comes round.
They break the news to the Samaans and the rest of the group. Vi tells them they can leave if they want to. Many of the neighbours retreat to the safety of their own homes.
Ash thinks they should negotiate. Then someone arrives at Penny’s house.
11pm Penny’s adult son OSCAR (18, incel vibes) arrives on a bike. He looks up at his parents’ house, reluctantly.
He has a cigarette to put off going inside.
Charlotte thinks that they should strike back against Penny by kidnapping her son. Then Penny will have to give Ali back and they won’t have to give any tickets.
Vi agrees with Ash - negotiate - but Danny agrees with Charlie.
Ash pulls Charlie aside: what is she thinking? They can’t kidnap someone!
Charlie pulls out the COIN. Ash hesitates. Charlie flips.
