CHAPTER 6K : CHARLOTTE AND EMMA AT SEA

HEADS. CHARLIE IS GOING TO TRY TO SAVE HER IN-LAWS.

CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 3 TICKETS to the RESETTLEMENT ZONE, but thanks to Ash’s lies, they’re down in CORNWALL and ASH’S PARENTS are about to be attacked by a NATIONALIST MILITIA. Charlie knows the latter; Ash doesn’t.

Charlie wants to try to get to the Resettlement Zone with Emma and Ash, but she also wants to save ANAND and VIDYA.

Ash is following Charlie out of guilt and duty, but he never willingly chooses the option that abandons his parents - he’ll always look for another way.

Our heroes started out reaffirming the value of family and togetherness, but they’ve repeatedly betrayed extended family members who’ve tried to help them. Ash and Charlie also haven’t communicated, have failed to understand each others’ positions, and have flipped the COIN to make obscene decisions. They’ve shown some resistance to its draw, but only to pull them further apart, and to lie. Thanks to these decisions, they’ve found themselves in a situation that feels like a folk horror. But, depending on the result of the current coin flip, can some of them still make it through the film alive …?

Charlie’s flipped over whether to just ignore the militia’s plan and keep driving to the Zone, or to go back and try to save her in-laws.

The COIN is HEADS. Charlie’s going to lead Ash back to the cottage, in an attempt to save his parents.

ACT FIVE.

4:35am Charlie takes the MILITIA MEMBER’S AXE and WALKIE-TALKIE. She goes and grabs the other MILITIA MEMBER’s rifle.

Ash, still reeling from what’s just happened, is incredibly confused. She tells him to get in the car - his parents are in danger.

Meanwhile, the FRENCH NAVY PERSONNEL (last seen in Chapter 1) shiver, waiting on a WARSHIP in THE CHANNEL.

4:40am Charlie speeds into the COTTAGE’S DRIVEWAY. She orders Ash to grab Emma, and she heads inside.

She enters to discover a MILITIA MEMBER about to attack her in-laws. She launches at the attacker, raising the axe - is she really about to do this?! She brings it down, clumsily, into the Militia Member’s neck.

Ash carries Emma inside and panics when he sees the body, covering Emma’s eyes. Vidya comes and takes Emma from him, and Charlie shouts at him to shut the front door.

He goes to do this, but a HENCH MILITIA MEMBER piles against the door. As Ash struggles to close the door, Anand comes to help.

Anand tells Ash to go. It’s too late. Vidya and himself will delay the militia - get to the MOTORBOAT.

Ash hesitates. Surely he can’t leave his parents to die?!

Ash’s impulse is to run to his parents, stay with them, be with them, help them … He’ll always feel guilty about leaving them, and hesitate over it.

The Decision Point appears onscreen:

EITHER ‘Heads’: ‘Leave Anand and Vidya’

OR ‘Tails’: ‘Stay and fight’

But a MILITIA MEMBER outside rushes forwards, and slips a machete through the gap in the door - goring Ash in the stomach.

Unfortunately, in the rules of the Two Roads universe, Ash and Charlie must be punished for their cowardly flips deciding Amy, Anand and Vidya’s fates.

Charlie rushes forward, puts the rifle through the letterbox and shoots the Hench Militia Member in the stomach. Charlie and Anand manage to get the door closed.

On the warship, an OFFICER tells his personnel to get ready.

Ash is bleeding heavily. He’s certainly not going to make it. He urges everyone to leave him.

Vidya and Anand look at each other, but they already know. There’s no way they’re leaving their son.

Vidya tells the others that they’re staying with Ash. Ash starts to protest, but Anand gives Charlie the keys to the motorboat.

Charlie brings Emma to Ash to say a brief goodbye, and Ash begs Charlie to take his parents too. She apologises to him, and then to Anand and Vidya. And then she flees into the GARDEN, pulling Emma along, wielding the axe with her other arm..

Emma runs behind Charlie, terrified. Charlie keeps an eye out for -

The MILITIA LEADER steps out of the darkness, his rifle ready - And Charlie lugs the axe clumsily at him. It catches him on the arm and he misses his shot.

Ash, Anand and Vidya are leaning on the front door. MILITIA MEMBERS hammer on it beyond. Behind them, the BACK DOOR in the KITCHEN smashes, and MILITIA MEMBERS start to let themselves in.

Charlie and Emma make it to the DOCK. Charlie lifts Emma inside, unties the boat, and jumps in.

MILITIA MEMBERS are in the garden, coming down towards them; and in the shallows, wading forwards.

Charlie starts the boat, and puts the throttle down.

The front door begins to splinter; Ash, Anand and Vidya give up and let go, backing into the LOUNGE. On the other side of the lounge, MILITIA MEMBERS kick down the PATIO DOORS.

Vidya and Anand take Ash’s hands. They all close their eyes.

5:15am Charlie and Emma are a little way out into THE CHANNEL now. She notices, parallel to her, other SMALL BOATS making the crossing. It’s a misty day.

The warship waits. The personnel are shocked to see dozens of small boats emerge from the mist.

Charlie is shocked to see the warship.

A Decision Point appears onscreen:

EITHER ‘Heads’: ‘Turn back’

OR ‘Tails’: ‘Speed ahead’

But Charlie takes her coin from her pocket and throws it into the sea. Then she puts the throttle down.

The Officer orders his personnel to start firing.

The personnel prepare to shoot -

But then one lays her gun down. Then another. They all begin to mutiny, to the Officer’s fury.

Charlotte’s motorboat passes the warship, and heads for land.

7am, a FRENCH BEACH. The FRENCH AUTHORITIES, in HAZMAT SUITS, help Charlotte and Emma from the motorboat.

There are MANY OTHERS being helped off of boats, and swimming through shallows, along the shore.

The authorities usher Charlie and Emma up a grassy verge, into FRANCE as refugees.

THE END

What if the coin had told Charlie to abandon Anand and Vidya? What if Ash had taken Amy to get medical attention? Do Anand and Vidya ever survive?  Start Two Roads again to find out.
