CHAPTER 6U: WAITING IN THE DINER
HEADS. TAILS. ASH WILL GO TO THE FARM. CHARLIE WILL STAY ON THE BUS
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 3 tickets to the Resettlement Zones.
Because their tickets are from different places, Ash was due to go to a different Zone to his family. At the last minute he told Charlie to go for ‘PLAN B’.
But they never agreed what ‘Plan B’ was. So now Ash has to decide whether to go to CORNWALL or WILDMAN FARM.
And Charlie has to decide whether to stay on the BUS to a Resettlement Zone with Emma, or get off and try to find Ash.
Heads. Ash will go to the farm where Charlie spent her childhood holidays.
Tails. Charlie will stay on the bus.
But she notices that the SOLDIERS on the bus are especially nervous …
Searching empty houses, Ash finds car keys on a kitchen counter.
He drives through the night. England is chaos.
He hits a ROADBLOCK staffed by SCARY SOLDIERS.
He turns back, and stops the car.
If he can’t get to the farm, probably Charlie can’t either. Where would she go instead …?
He sees a sign for a ROADSIDE DINER.
We flash back to a family holiday where they ate at a ROADSIDE DINER NEAR CORNWALL. Ash jokes to Emma that if ever she’s lost she should come here. She can eat pancakes for the rest of her life and be happy.
He heads to the diner.
Stepping inside, he hears a rumble. He’s hit by the shockwave from a bomb - BIRMINGHAM HAS BEEN BOMBED.
But he’s okay. He leans on the counter and looks about the place. Good enough. A big novelty clock says 3.30am. She’s got time.
We flash back to Charlie and Emma on the bus. Charlie checks her watch: 2.15am.
The bus suddenly pulls over, to the side of the road.
The soldiers demands that those on board give up their BRACELETS. The soldiers include PRIVATES BLAKE and WILSON.
Jeeps of other SOLDIERS are arriving around them.
Charlie gives up her and Emma’s BRACELETs. She’s ready to talk their way out of this.
Then the soldiers raise their rifles, and shoot everyone onboard.
Ash sweeps up the broken glass from the bomb blast.
Sets the coffee machine going. Whisks pancake batter.
Lays three places on a table in a booth.
Sits at the counter, waiting. The big novelty clock says 7am. But he’s sure Charlie will come.
THE END
What if this double flip had gone a different way? What if Ash and Charlie hadn’t helped Curtis’s family? What if Charlie hadn’t played the Samaans? Can they all get to the Resettlement Zone safely? Start Two Roads again to find out.
