CHAPTER 6Q: EMMA IN THE WOODS

TAILS.  CHARLIE GOES ALONG WITH ASH'S PLAN

CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 1 ticket to the Resettlement Zone.

Charlotte managed to get her colleague DARREN to buy her a ticket, but not before Ash had sold the two tickets they already had in an act of misguided heroism.

In an attempt to hide his mistake, and in his determination to prove himself capable of looking after his family, Ash has manipulated Charlie into going to CORNWALL with him, instead of the Resettlement Zone.

Charlie, though significantly weakened by his attacks, has now realised Ash has lied to her.

She has flipped over whether to fight against this new, monstrous Ash, or go along with his plan.

Tails. Charlotte settles down for the ride, her wits about her.

Ash saw the coin flip, and ‘playfully’ grabs the COIN. He throws it out of the window. They don’t need the coin anymore. They know what they’re doing.

In the RESETTLEMENT ZONE, we see PENNY and DARREN having brunch together.

Emma complains of being hungry, and Ash decides to break into a ROADSIDE DINER they’ve been to before. He’s keen to maintain that Emma needs him, prefers him. And hey, it’s the end of the world! Why not?

A flashback to happier times on a previous holiday road trip.

Ash makes Emma a sandwich. Gets her a coke. Charlie points out she isn’t usually allowed fizzy drinks. They’ll all have water. She pours three glasses of TAP WATER but Emma refuses hers. The three eat and drink in silence.

Darren and Penny laugh about the tragic Dhumals. Darren’s better off without that bitch.

Back on the road, and nearing their destination, Ash finally turns the RADIO on for a bored Emma. But they only find news.

A local radio station says there are rumours from Cornwall that there’s an issue with tap water.

A silent tension in the ELECTRIC CAR.

Which runs out of charge.

It’s OK, says Ash… they’ll get out and walk!

Charlie’s not feeling well, but Ash insists they’re fine.

Another, warped vision of Penny and Darren maniacally laughing together as we realise the images are in Charlie’s head.

She is really struggling. Ash is only getting more angry as he fights the truth of his own increasing illness.

We start to shift to Emma’s perspective, and the horror movie she’s living through, as Ash gets annoyed with her singing to her mum to keep her awake.

When Ash shouts at her, Emma panics and flees into the woods. Charlie weakly jumps in angry Ash’s way, but he pushes her off and chases Emma.

Emma flees like a monster’s behind her. Ash becomes increasingly furious and discombobulated as he runs. What’s he capable of?

After Ash almost catches Emma, and she runs deeper into the woods, CUT TO -

7am  Charlie lies on the leafy floor of the woods, clutching one of Emma’s shoes. Charlie’s dead. Her eyes are bleeding.

Emma hides behind a tree, trying not to breathe. A twig cracks behind her. She screams.

THE END

What if Charlie had fought Ash and refused to continue the journey? What if Ash had come clean about selling the tickets? What are these two people capable of throughout the night? Start Two Roads again to find out.
