Having fallen mysteriously ill, both Charlie and Ash have died, leaving Darren in charge of getting Emma to the Resettlement Zone. GABIE and MICHAEL KING, a rich couple who want a child, are looking for Emma. 

 

Darren has been injured in the recent bomb blast. 

 

The unlikely pair stand at a crossroads on the outskirts of Leamington. Which way to turn? Emma has flipped a coin.

 

Tails. They should turn left.

 

Darren says he was going to go left anyway. Emma’s happy

 

In this strand we see the effects of her parents’ behaviour on Emma. With them gone, how well equipped is she to cope with the world? How will the night’s events shape her?

 

The Kings are waiting at the end of the street. Darren sees them coming, and hides Emma from what is about to happen. Drug-addled Michael attacks; Darren easily overpowers and kills him.

 

He tells a distraught Gabie that Emma deserves better. He’s prepared to do the same to her if she doesn’t let them past.

 

He keeps walking, past Gabie, carrying Emma. He’s bleeding out.

 

Darren gets onto a road and sees the PICK UP POINT burning in the distance.

 

Darren sets Emma down, dejected.

 

But a jeep rolls past. Two SOLDIERS inside see Emma and pull over. They’re too late for the buses, the Pick up Point has been overrun. 

 

Darren presents their TICKETS. Is there anything they can do? 

 

The soldiers load Emma into the Jeep. Turn to Darren.

 

He lies down and says he’ll be alright. They should go, quickly. Don’t waste time on him. He grins as Emma waves to him, and as the jeep pulls away, enters cardiac arrest. We CUT TO -

 

7am  An ORPHANAGE in the SWANSEA RESETTLEMENT ZONE. A CARER tells another: the government knows what’s causing the crisis, they’re going to announce it soon. They’re going to survive this!

 

Emma’s in the orphanage. She’s offered a choice of two breakfasts. She considers flipping her COIN, but stops, and makes a decision for herself. She sits down at a table with the other children.
