CHAPTER 6G : STEP AWAY FROM YOUR WIFE
HEADS. CHARLOTTE WINS. CHARLOTTE TAKES EMMA.
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have two tickets to the Resettlement Zone, no other visible options for safety, and their Pick Up Time is here. Their relationship has deteriorated to outright animosity. Outside, England is burning.
Charlotte believes she has to go to the Resettlement Zone with Emma, and she can’t talk Ash into it. She’s decided she’s going to have to make a break for it.
Ash wants to go to the Resettlement Zone with Emma, and he thinks there’s no chance Charlotte will let him. He’s decided he’s going to have to make a break for it.
Our heroes started out a loving family planning how to beat the apocalypse together, but they’ve ended up in the midst of a vicious and dangerous divorce. Unfortunately for Emma, her parents have been unable to communicate, understand each other’s position, or make decisions without the Coin. This road is a tragedy.
Ash and Charlie flipped over which one of them goes with Emma to the Resettlement Zone.
4:50am The coin is heads. Charlie is going with Emma.
The PROBLEM is: both parents believe that the other is a danger to Emma. And their survival instincts are ready to help them make some fast and foolish decisions.
Ash thinks. Charlie collects Emma. Ash lays his bracelet on the coffee table for Charlie to take. As she does he grabs her wrist. She escapes and he follows.
In the living room we hear the HELPLINE OPERATOR on the landline. Can they hear her? She has secured a third ticket for them. It is on his wife’s bracelet.
PRIVATES BARRETT AND BRIDLE weave through the streets of suburbia to collect the Dhumals. It’s their last pick up.
The soldiers arrive and warn Ash to step away from Charlie as their fighting escalates. He ignores them - stay out of this! He lunges at his wife. And they shoot.
White noise as Charlie suddenly sees the reality of what she’s done. Gunfire in the near distance as she tries to grab hold of Ash, but the two soldiers drag her away, carrying Emma to the jeep. They need to go.
Charlotte talks to a soldier at the PICK UP POINT. She only has her husband’s ID bracelet and ticket. He’s dead. The soldier scans Charlie’s bracelet to verify her identity. She’s been assigned a ticket of her own. About half an hour ago.
7am on a BUS to a Resettlement Zone. The SOLDIER DRIVING is radioed by a COLLEAGUE: the government knows what’s causing the crisis, they’re going to announce it soon. They’ll be safe in the Resettlement Zones.
In the seats behind, Emma wants one of her toys. She searches through a bag Ash packed, and finds their wedding photo. Emma calls out to Charlie. She doesn’t hear.
THE END
What if Ash had won the last toss? What if they’d had sex rather than kissing? Do they ever find out the source of the crisis? Do they ever all reach the Resettlement Zone? Should they?! Start Two Roads again to find out.
