CHAPTER 6E : CHARLOTTE'S SUICIDE
HEADS. CHARLIE STOPS ASH AND TAKES HIS PLACE
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have 2 TICKETS to the RESETTLEMENT ZONE. Their PICK UP is here - PRIVATES BARRETT and BRIDLE - and the Dhumals have decided that Charlotte will go to the Zone with Emma, and Ash will stay behind. But over the course of the night, Charlie has seen that she still loves Ash, and she has just discovered that he is going to commit suicide as soon as her and Emma leave.
Charlie believes the best thing for Emma would be to let Ash die, but wants to take his place. She’s left what she does next up to the COIN.
This road is about Charlie and Ash finding their strength, and how their love triumphs. But they can’t quite escape their failures, and a simple mistake - a single coin flip - prevents a truly happy ending.
The COIN is HEADS. Charlie stops Ash and takes his place.
She shouts inside (to spare Ash the embarrassment of her having seen what he’s doing). He panics and hides the PILLS.
She claims to have forgotten something. While she searches for it, he should go see Emma again. Charlie gives Ash back his LETTER FOR EMMA - why doesn’t he read that to her?
Ash heads outside, and comforts Emma. She calms down. He begins to read her his letter, about how he and his mother fought together to save her when the world was falling apart, and how he imagines FUTURE EMMA.
CRASH! A noise from inside the house. Ash rushes back inside to discover that Charlotte, sat on the sofa, has slit her wrists with the SCALPEL.
Ash screams for help; the soldiers rush inside and check Charlie. Bridle makes the call - the wounds are too bad for them to sew, and she’s bleeding too badly to make it to the PICK UP POINT. They’ll have to leave her here.
Ash begins to argue with them but Charlie asks him to stop.
Behind them, there’s a voice from the LANDLINE - the HELPLINE OPERATOR. Private Barrett, stood by the phone, puts the phone down, and then the privates exit, to give the Dhumals a moment alone.
Ash crouches beside Charlie, and she starts to chuckle - does he know what that crash was? It was his RICKETY DIY SHELF!
But the thing is, she just fucking loves him. And that’s that.
She tells him goodbye. She has transferred the tickets to him. He needs to go now, for her and for Emma.
He tells her she’s amazing. She dies.
Then he leaves.
We see her on the sofa, smiling. She’s happy that she saved him.
7am, on a BUS to the RESETTLEMENT ZONE. The SOLDIER DRIVING is radioed by a COLLEAGUE: the government knows what’s causing the crisis, they’re going to announce it soon. They’re going to survive this!
In the seats behind, Ash clings to Emma.
THE END
What if the coin had told Charlie to walk away? What if they’d experienced Ash’s big romantic gesture, rather than having sex? Do they ever all make it to the Resettlement Zone? What did the Helpline Operator want to tell them? Start Two Roads again to find out.
