CHAPTER 6D : ASH THE MARTYR
TAILS. ASH WINS. ASH SPEAKS HIS MIND
CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA are in the SWANSEA RESETTLEMENT ZONE, but Ash is there under false pretenses - as their neighbour, scientist MARK NEWMAN.
In an increasingly dangerous environment, Ash has found himself in a committee meeting, being blackmailed into arguing for lessening rations to civilians.
Ash believes this is morally wrong and wants to speak out. Charlie needs him to keep his head down.
The coin reads tails. He will speak his mind.
Ash tells the council he doesn’t agree with the planned RATIONING. He doesn’t think the CITIZENS will accept it.
He stands and gives a shaky little speech: how we act in times like this is what defines us. We're fine to have plenty of rations ourselves while others suffer?
If they go ahead with this plan, he’ll be forced to go public.
The HEAD SCIENTIST is furious. His colleagues are shaken and confused. One of them reaches for something under the desk. After a long, tense, increasingly terrifying silence, Ash excuses himself. As he leaves the room he sees soldiers approaching down the corridor. He must think fast.
He sprints to a COMMS ROOM and barricades himself in. He gets on the radio system and starts an announcement to the entire Zone: he’s seen the leaders’ plans, it’s a dictatorship, you don’t have to live like this! Central Wales is safe, and free of these authoritarians!
Charlie, shocked, listens in her TENT, Emma playing at her feet. Then sets off at a sprint.
CURTIS arrives at the comms room, begging Ash to stop. SOLDIERS force Curtis out of the way, and start to break the door down.
Charlie reaches the scene but is held back by Curtis before she gets too close. He gives her a notebook, and begs her to get back to Emma. She leaves. JOHNSON arrives and orders Curtis taken back into custody.
Ash sees Charlotte through a window, outside. He pauses his announcement, then addresses Charlie directly: he’s sorry he won’t see Emma grow up. But he’s happy to be remembered like this.
The soldiers finally break down the door - and shoot him.
7am We see Charlie and Emma pass a stage in a SQUARE, where Johnson announces that a spy has been caught leaking important government information, and will be punished. To his surprise, the CROWD is angry about this. Soldiers begin to arrest people, but it’s clear that rebellion is fomenting.
Charlie and Emma pass a wall with Ash’s name graffitied on it. Charlie is almost knocked over by JACOB as he runs past, clutching his notebook.
Charlie and Emma reach the outskirts of the Zone. Charlie opens the notebook Curtis gave her: it contains a map of the Zone, with a section of the wall marked in red. Then, a map of Wales, with an area around Aberystwyth circled.
They duck behind a shop and find a breach in the perimeter fence. Charlie pulls Ash’s satchel tighter on her back and leads Emma through the gap.
THE END
What if Ash had spoken up? What if they hadn’t come clean to the Newmans? Can this family ever survive the night together? Start Two Roads again to find out.
