CHAPTER 5E : NUCLEAR APOCOLYPSE?

HEADS. SEND BILL OUT.

CHARLOTTE and EMMA have NO TICKETS to the Resettlement Zone. ASH has ONE. Charlotte’s father BILL and her sister AMY have trapped Charlotte and Emma in a BUNKER at WILDMAN FARM.

BILL BELIEVES Charlotte will stay in the bunker with him. He has asked her to choose between him and Ash staying in the bunker.

The coin reads heads.

2:15am Charlie tells her father she has chosen Ash. He will come inside.

To her surprise, and despite Amy’s protestations, Bill stands up and leaves. He’s a man of his word.

Bill lets Ash inside. Ash can’t look Charlie in the eye yet, after the flip. He hugs Emma.

Ash tries to call his parents but there’s no signal in the bunker. Fuck! He should have tried earlier.

We cut to ANAND and VIDYA, without a car, together in their LIVING ROOM. Surrounded by photographs. They hear something outside - an ANGRY MOB. They flee upstairs, as the mob begins to break down the front door. They climb into their LOFT, and hide.

Time ticks on. Bill waits outside.

Amy and Jim start to doubt Bill’s theory.

3:27am Suddenly the radio announces: a BOMB WARNING, an ‘incoming projectile’.

Bill hears something happening but can’t hear specifics. He comes to the door. Amy tells him what’s happening, and orders him to come inside.

Big Bill is triumphant. But he’s not coming in.

Bill tells Amy he loves her, and then calls Charlie over. He tells her what HIS LETTER said: come back to me. I’ll do anything for you. I know you think I’m selfish but there will come a moment where I prove to you it was all for something. And here it is.

Bill walks away from the door, into the middle of a field, and watches the sky.

3.30am There’s a HUGE explosion nearby.

The FIREBALL whips through the field, killing Bill.

Anand and Vidya’s house has been ransacked. There’s an explosion in the distance; its shockwave shakes the house. Inside, a smashed, frozen laptop screen shows that they never had tickets to the Resettlement Zone. We discover Anand and Vidya in the wreckage of their kitchen, toasting each other with a glass of expensive, dusty champagne. They kiss. They don’t seem to notice the explosion.

The bunker goes haywire - the inhabitants screaming, things grinding.

An alarm goes off. Jim goes and checks it out. The VENTILATION SYSTEM is struggling - rubble from the blast has gotten in. Charlie damaged the vent earlier. Noone can clear the blockage.

Charlie gets Emma to try, but it’s still a squeeze.

Then Ash gets the LUBE out of his bag and smothers it on Emma’s arm. She finds it gross. But she manages to fit her arm in, and starts clearing out the rubble.

7am Amy expertly dresses Charlie’s wound as everyone else sleeps. Amy points out that Bill was right. And it might well mean they’re now the only five people left on earth.

Charlie acknowledges this. But they can’t ignore the pain he caused them - his mother - the wedge he drove between them, making them resent each other.

But they can put that right. Emma wakes up, and Charlie hands her over to her aunt. Emma is clearly still confused by this woman who looks like Mummy.

Jim wakes and completes his tasks for the day. Amy and Emma help, methodically moving through what will now be their daily life.

On a CB radio, Jim hears from a PREPPER FRIEND from his prepper network: it looks like any survivors of the crisis are going to be okay. There’s rumours coming out of survivors in CORNWALL that the crisis is being caused by -

The radio cuts out. It needs new batteries. Jim sets about replacing them.

Charlie and Ash step away for a moment. Have the healthiest version of THE CONFRONTATION. The night has allowed them to both reflect on why they struggle to communicate, on their differences, their flaws. And if they’re going to live here, they’re going to have to get better. No more coin.

Jobs done, Jim begins to play the guitar. Emma brings over a board game. The new family settle down to play.

Outside, the farm is a wasteland. The bunker is a tiny slice of heaven in a burning hell.

THE END

What if Charlie had chosen Bill? What if Ash had gone to see her family instead? Was Bill really right about the nuclear apocalypse? Start Two Roads again to find out.
