CHAPTER 6DD: THE PLANCE

TAILS. INVESTIGATE THE COORDINATES.

CHARLOTTE, ASH and EMMA have no tickets to the Resettlement Zone.

Penny’s son OSCAR (18), who the Dhumals kidnapped earlier, has led them to CURTIS’S HOUSE, where they have discovered secret government documents.

VI has been killed by a mysterious intruder, and Oscar is acting suspiciously. But he believes that they have discovered the location of a downed Russian military plane.

Ash and Charlie have flipped over whether to search for the plane, or turn on Oscar.

Tails. They all head to the car.

Flash to ALEX, Curtis’s wife, bound and gagged in a cellar. Two CHILDREN hiding in a kitchen cupboard.

The gang drive through a dangerous Midlands, Oscar giving directions. Perhaps a few wrong turns, dead ends along the way.

3am They arrive at a field. There is a plane. Oscar dances around it, victorious.

They approach the plane to find three apparently dead RAF CREW, two with bleeding eyes. Not Russian.

Flash to the panicked RAF PILOT seen in Chapter One, as the plane goes down.

Emma is amazed. Oscar searches frantically through the hold, where there’s a sealed chamber. It contains lots of isolation containers, filled with soil samples, labelled ‘Hydrax’ (where have they read that before …?!). Emma sees the flower on the label and smiles.

One of the crew murmurs. The Dhumals drag him from the plane. Charlie tries to resuscitate him as Ash asks him questions. Who is he? What is he doing? Where were they heading? A few murmured words. ‘Anglesey’. ‘Top secret’. ‘Leaks’.

The crew member dies. Emma pulls paper from her pocket. The same nice flower. Look daddy! Ash grabs the paper and scours it. A few words, amongst the singed edges - ‘chemical treatment’, ‘workers at 6 plants un-’, ‘system down’.

Ash tries to piece it all together. It’s 3.28am. Charlie interrupts him but he pushes her away - he’s almost got it! They’ve discovered something massive here. He was right all along, it was the government.

A huge explosion nearby. Charlie pushes her family towards the plane but Oscar looks her in the eye, swings the door closed, and locks it.

Charlie turns to Ash. But there’s nothing to do.

Ash doesn’t know what to say. His brain is empty. Which is of course when he realises what’s been causing the crisis. And when the fireball dissolves him.

7am The same field. The plane has rolled quite a way, and broken into pieces. Inside one part, the sealed chamber is intact.

Inside, Oscar is recording a video. He still thinks the Russians are behind it all.

THE END

What if the Dhumals had overpowered Oscar? What if they had negotiated, rather than kidnapping him? Does Ash ever get to be the hero? Is Russia involved in the crisis? Start Two Roads again to find out.
